Upgrading Of Exhaust Systems For Performance Or Cosmetic Reasons

To upgrade the performance, appearance and fuel economy of a vehicle, just swap it with a high quality exhaust system.

Tasks performed by exhaust systems

  • Removes the by-products of combustion from the engine
  • Eliminates/reduces pollutants from exhaust fumes
  • Reduces and tunes exhaust noise

Parts of exhaust systems

  • Section one - In general this section includes 2 or 3 parts namely, exhaust manifold, downpipe and exhaust headers.
  • Section two - It has connecting pipes, catalytic converter and muffler.
  • Section three - This section consist of tail pipe and exhaust tip.

Materials used in exhaust systems

Exhaust systems are designed from metals, especially steel. Steel are available in different kinds and possess diverse properties. However, today exhaust systems are made from aluminized steel, T304SS and T409SS.
  • Aluminized steel - This coated alloy resists corrosion and works wonderfully in the high-heat situation. Expansion caused by heat is negligible therefore it is often employed in OEP and aftermarket exhaust systems.
  • T304 SS - This is a mid-priced material rarely used in OEM systems but is best for aftermarket exhaust systems. They are rust and corrosion resistant. It does not crack or become hard when exposed to high-heat. Stainless steel expands on heating and so you can hear rattle sound from the system till it warms up completely.
  • T409 SS - It is the most expensive option because it is stabilized using titanium. It will then resist corrosion and swelling, because intensity of heat gets reduced.

Two kinds of exhaust systems

  • Single exhaust system - It maintains car’s factory looks, increases exhaust evacuation, gives better exhaust tone, gives a slight improvement in horsepower, and is inexpensive to install
  • Dual exhaust system - It provides impressive looks but is comparatively expensive. It includes two sets of all section parts, which pains the expense, but the benefits of upgrade are truly worth it.
In general, it is difficult to decide between single or dual Exhaust system. However, you can get them at car repair & customization shops, and online storefronts. Buying online is the best option as you can select from an array of options and get the one with the perfect blend of looks and desired car  performance.
